How did this Labradoodle craze get started anyway?
The Labradoodle: An Informal History:
You may have heard of the Labradoodle and even seen that curiously curly
coated canine in your neighborhood. But, did you know where the Labradoodle
began?
The Labradoodle actually got its start from a woman in Hawaii. This particular
woman had two things that didn’t combine well: She was blind and she had
allergies. She wanted a Labrador Retriever Service Dog, but her allergies made
it impossible. So she contacted The Australian Guide Dog Association for some
help.
At the time, there was no good alternative for her, so the Association set out
on a task to create a new breed of hypoallergenic dog that would also be a great
assistance dog. So they mixed the best characteristics of the Labrador Retriever
with a breed that smart and non-shedding – the Standard Poodle.
The idea of a Labrador Poodle hybrid dog took off in Australia and the dogs were
bred as service dogs for blind people with allergies and asthma. Since the
Labradoodle doesn’t shed, it’s very allergy friendly and is considered to be a
hypoallergenic dog.
While Labradoodles sure have their fans, this designer crossbreed is not without
controversy. The purists at the National Labrador and Poodle clubs both advise
against crossbreeding in order to protect breed purity of their respective
breeds.
Even in the face of controversy, every day more and more people are won over by
the wonderful, playful disposition and good looks of Labradoodles. Thanks to
their low maintenance and non-shedding coats, Labradoodles are popular as
service dogs, therapy dogs and especially family pets.
